Vintage French Sheet Slipcovers: Part 1

This is such a pretty photo of my little living room...taken by the super talented team of
Victoria Pearson and Heather Bullard
for Country Living Magazine

those are some very old and creaky windows
on the wall behind the pine bench, so I'm really glad they don't show !

We have some fun and interesting plans in the works for that wall
( a new space for dining and entertaining!)
but that's another story

So lets talk about the couch...
 the story with this couch
(why does all of my furniture have a story? too weird)
is that I basically got it for free,
well almost free...
When we bought this house I needed a small couch and
I had tons of American Express Rewards points so
I turned them into Pottery Barn gift cards
and bought a couch...yep it was quite a few gift cards

Here is the couch in the catalog:
It is called the Greenwich Loveseat
It has a tight back which makes it seem deeper for a small couch
 and
the lines are clean and simple
with plenty of room for pillows

I also thought that it would look great slip covered without being too frilly

Because the living room is rather long and narrow,  there are only a few ways to place the furniture
so the back of couch can be seen most of time.

I know that doesn't sound like a big problem but how often do
we really think about how the back of a couch looks?

And what fabric to use for the slip covers?!

Once again I called on my wonderful friend Wendy Lewis

I purchased some wonderful faded floral fabric
very similar to this

my original plan was to slip cover the cushions in the floral and the rest of the couch
in white or cream linen...
but in the end the fabric seemed lightweight and bit too feminine
and maybe not quite strong enough to hold up to
dogs, muddy shoes and coffee stains

So how about thick French Linen sheets?

Perfection!

I purchased 3 really big sheets.
Two with red monograms like this one

and one with a white monogram and ladder cut work like this one

None of them match
but the weight is very similar
and they feel old and washed and very antique!

Just what I was looking for...

Next post...

getting creative and putting it all together

Cover Girl

About two and a half years ago...when I owned this house,  I was contacted by a magazine editor who loved it and she wanted to photograph it!

Well guess what, somebody finally did
and she's now officially a
"Cover Girl"

As many of you know I sold the house completely furnished.

When I stopped by for the photo shoot I sort of felt like a ghost...coming back to haunt my old house...that lasted about 5 minutes
and it was back to business as usual
This is the first issue of a new magazine
which will come out twice a year.

It's more of a book format and
has no advertising.

It can be found at book stores and magazine stands in most states.

The stylist for this shoot was Sunday Hendrickson
and we really had fun.

Sunday definitely knows what she is looking for
as she styles on each room.

I have to say I was relieved to see there would
not be a single bowl of green apples
or the usual pair of "Wellies" on a stair step!

Sunday's styling is very natural,
relaxed and real
The writer is Marie Albert and she really captured all of the details about the house
and the story correctly.  I really like her style of writing too....

I spent at least an hour speaking with Managing Editor Janet Mowat,
who was so kind and interested in the story behind this house as well!

LA based photographer John Ellis took all the shots for this article.
Sunday did a great job on the kitchen shot.
OMG there all all my great  "egg" signs!
What is it about these old signs....they are just wonderful.

I brought quite a few things for the shoot too...including lots of oranges, lemons and limes
from our orchard in Ojai

We all thought the shot above might be the cover...
which I think would have looked great as well!

The colors of the tulips and the quilt are so great together!
I styled the little cabinet  with Roseville pottery and  lilacs that Sunday brought.

I added a new/old sign I bought a while back
that says
 "flower plants for sale"

There are also some fresh limes from my garden!

The side bar in the photo above gives the reader detailed instructions
on how to create the slip covered headboard
I created in the guest room.  A really nice idea.

Below is a photo that I took right before
we put the house on the market for sale

and here it is in the magazine...over two years later!
Thank you so much to the Harris Publishing Family,
 Sunday Hendrickson
and John Ellis...
and especially to Malia....the new owner of this wonderful little house!

It's been a pleasure!

happy decorating

Window Seat Love & Pillows in the Kitchen

Window seats are always a great spot to showcase interesting textiles
and I now have one in my new kitchen!
Always on the lookout for wonderful things, I often will buy a textile
with no idea
as to what I will do with it.

This was a textile I just couldn't pass up!
I purchased it about 6 months ago from my wonderful friend Wendy Lewis.

When she described it a something she has never come across before...I knew it was going to be really special

and it really is

It was originally a very large "drop cloth" of pieced together burlap sacks.

And to make it more wonderful, the entire outside edge was finished off
in a bright red cotton bias tape.

We think it was used by olive farmers to collect their ripe olives
after they are shaken from the tree.

Even if it was used for something else
the story sounds like a good one
and the cloth showed all the signs of being used that way.

All of the tatters and worn areas are what I love about it...and there is no way you can reproduce the vintage faded look of a fabric like this.

So Pottery Barn...don't even try guys!
Running throughout  the various sacks used to make up this large cloth,
are beautiful faded stripes of ecru, purple and red.

I did wash this cloth about 3 times on the gentle cycle,
with lots of fabric softener
to clean it up.
The cloth has beautiful faded lettering and I designed the cushions to take advantage of the graphics, the stripe and the red bias tape
We cut off the tape and re-worked it into a flanged welting...but there wasn't quite enough to do the bottom, so we used left over burlap for that.
 And now for pillows!

I collect old small vintage, children's ticking feather pillows...

they look cute!

How about some French striped ticking?

What about some blue with the red?

Lets try out antique black floral and some really old
graphic grain sack pillows...

And finally I tried out these bright turquoise floral pillows
 made from
French curtain panels....love these!
Wow...everything just looked so fun with the new window seat cushions....
I really doubt I will ever keep it the same for more than a week.

 Any favorites?

I took a little time off to catch my breath
and enjoy Mothers Day with my family

But thank you for stopping by
and
I will have more great ideas to share soon!

best, Kelley

Cutter Quilt Cushions and Kubu Rattan

For those of you who have followed The Polished Pebble for a while,
you know that I am a serious vintage fabric junkie
I love old quilts too and found this great looking "cutter" on eBay

Thought I might use it for some pillows...
but then....the plan  changed
I have two of these really huge Kubu rattan chairs on a back porch
and the cushions were plain beige sunbrella...

BOOORE---IINNGG!

The old quilt top has tons and tons of character and dozens
of small little patches and stitches of hand sewn love!
It looks like Grandpa's shirts were the main ingredient,
mixed in with some really old homespun and small little checks

It is really more of a patchwork with very little quilting...
which made this so much easier to cut up

All of the different colors of faded fabric and a really soft feel from all the years of use make this wonderful to sit on...
just ask my napping Husband...
oh and my dog Millie approves too!
I paired the cushions with some vintage striped grain sacks
purchased from my wonderful friend Wendy Lewis
The back cushions sport the same red stripe
as does the ottoman
We made a  few new pillows from "left overs" to add to the mix...everything being reversible to a different look

The seat and ottoman are backed with new cotton/linen heavy weight fabric with a very simple cream stripe....I can flip them over in case I get tired of the quilt
But that may be a while....
the upholsterer really stuffed the seats at my request....
lots of extra fill and poofy crowned centers
Kubu rattan has been all over the design blog world for quite some time and I have to say I love it too!

These chairs came from Halo Styles and are really like a chair-and-a-half...
super wide and deep
It's fun to think of new ways to use vintage fabric and really mix it up...
my poor upholsterer usually calls me at least three times
during one of these crazy projects
The chairs sit under a covered porch most of the time...
but I love the look of really faded fabric too, so no worries here
By the way "cutter" quilts are those that have problems
like tears, stains and holes

they are great for craft projects
and things like this,
because you don't feel bad when you cut them up
and usually they are really well priced

one final note:

A big shout out to Wendy from Textile Trunk

She was featured in an article in the LA Daily news and asked me to send them a  few photos of the many projects I have done using her fabric

You can read the article here

Hope you are enjoying the end of summer...and did you notice how the ice tea got lower and lower as the I wrote this

I must have been thirsty
